It only sounded like a change of subject. "That despite the way it looks when you're nineteen--sorry, but nineteen's so young you've still got that New Human Smell--it's not hunting or the 'burbs with no possibility of an in between." He smiled at her, wry and gentle. "I know your family did the whole Hunting Uber Alles thing, but there are some families who manage not to do it that way. Who don't raise their kids to be warriors. There's actually a pair of hunters set up about forty miles froim here, the O'Donnells, who have a nice ranch-style in the 'burbs and a three year old boy. They've got live-in help, the neighbors think he's Mrs. O'Donnell's younger brother, but actually he's a hunter who took an unlucky shot to the back of the knee and can't walk right any more. He looks after Dylan when Mom and Dad have to go on business trips. They do their research and know their territory, they have a good relationship with a handful of other hunters and don't get all prideful about calling for backup. They do a lot of good in the world, and then when they get home, they get to watch Thomas the Tank Engine with Dylan instead of working him through the clap-and-dance games that lay the foundation for knife training." He shook his head, resisting the urge to go on about it. Melissa O'Donnell was one of his, and Jophiel had a tendency to sound like a kid with a crush when he talked about his charges. He knew them so completely, and who could ever resist loving what they knew so well? "It's possible. There is such a thing as a happy medium." |
