He can also see Reapers, and he's pretty sure he can interact with them if he wants to but he has emphatically never wanted to.

Overall Personality: Louder, friendlier, more outgoing than his twin yet slower to show his real self to a stranger. He's intense about music, about family, about everything he cares about. He's the spokesman of the Byron siblings, and of the band, and he's as charismatic off the stage as he is on.
However, Luke is also terribly dependent on his siblings, and the rest of the band by extension. The TBI has left him with not just blinding headaches but also with occasional panic attacks and memory lapses, which he counts on his siblings and friends to help him hide. Worse, when he's having an episode the dead have a tendency to get real chatty, and he can't always wholly differentiate between the living and the dead. Only his band and his family know about the mediumship, and that's how Luke would rather keep it.

There Is A Monster At The End Of The Book

Mothers Name: Rebecca Dawn Woodward Byron
Fathers Name: William Holtz (Biological father, the twins have never met him), Max Byron (Stepfather, has raised the twins since they were in preschool)
Siblings: Alec Byron (identical twin), Norah Byron (stepsister)
Overall History: There's no denying that the life Luke and his brother and sister have lived looks idyllic from the outside. The perfect high-income upper middle class childhood, with all the attendant perks and more than their fair share of good luck. And in some ways, that's quite true.
It started with Luke and Alec's mother, Rebecca Woodward, a young single mother working as a reporter at the San Jose Mercury News. When she took her toddlers to a play group sponsored by the local gym, she met Max Byron, a widower with a daughter just eight days younger than the boys. The young parents hit it off, and eventually play dates for the kids turned into real dates for the grown-ups. Max and Rebecca married just before the kids turned four years old, and the blended family has always been a happy one.
The kids grew up with plenty of extra-curricular classes, supervised play dates, were encouraged to take up the arts and noncompetitive sports. Alec and Luke particularly took to skating and surfing and living less than half an hour from the beach meant that the boys were on the water or the ramps pretty much every weekend from the time they were 10 onward.
But no life is actually perfect. The summer before their freshman year of high school Luke was hit by a car while skating along the sidewalk of an overpass. The sedan hit him hard enough that it knocked him through the fencing and he fell all the way down to the train tracks twenty-five feet below. It was certainly a miracle that he wasn't killed, but the impact split open the back of Luke's scalp and left him with a focal brain injury that took months to heal even enough that Luke could return to school, and with symptoms that will linger for the rest of his life.
One of the symptoms of closed injury to the temporal lobe being visual and auditory hallucinations, Luke wasn't completely surprised when not long after the accident he started seeing people that weren't there. He was a lot more surprised the first time one of them talked him into doing a 'net search and he found out that the people he saw were real, they just happened to be dead. It's a lot for a kid to deal with, especially on top of the injuries, but he eventually got a basic control over his abilities though he's never liked them.
The band started up not long after Luke's accident, it grew out of Alec and Norah looking for something that Luke could do even with impaired motor control and ongoing headaches. One of the things that came clear fairly quickly was that though he couldn't walk down a hallway without falling over or watch TV for half an hour without getting a blinding migraine, he could still play his guitar and music didn't give him headaches. So they started up a garage band, originally inviting the boys' friend Doro and then later getting a guy named Peter that they knew from music classes to take over the keyboard so that Norah could move to doing bass and lead vocals.
Of all of them, Luke was the least surprised when Lorica drew attention from a real label. He's always had confidence in the group's talent, and he's always been the dreamer. He likes being on the road, though it's physically rough on him sometimes, but looks forward to getting back to L.A. and into the studio. He and Norah have been writing like crazy the whole time they're on the road, and he's ready to settle in and work seriously on their new stuff.
Luke still suffers from frequent headaches from the TBI, as well as a host of other problems. He gets eyestrain easily, which the tinted prescription glasses he wears help with but don't cure, and he has to be be incredibly cautious about doing anything that might end up with him getting knocked in the head. He has memory lapses, they're rare but when they happen they freak him right the hell out, and occasional panic attacks that are usually triggered either by being hit with a hole in his memory or by one of his encounters with the no-longer-with-us.
His brother and sister know all of Luke's problems, all of his triggers, including the ones that mean that he's about to start a conversation with a dead guy. Alec and Norah are incredibly smooth about covering for their brother, and the fact that the two of them are always at some level watching him so that they can step in if he starts having trouble weighs on Luke. The more because he knows that he needs it; he really can't function normally without someone there to intervene when the world starts messing with his head. He realizes that the three of them can't continue this codependent relationship forever, but trying to do anything about it while they're on the road seems pointless. Too many triggers, too many chances for everything to go to hell, it's just not the right time for breaking functional patterns.
